What is NWICG?

The Northwest Indiana Computational Grid (NWICG) is a partnership consisting of researchers and educators at Purdue University-Calumet (Calumet), the University of Notre Dame, and Purdue University-West Lafayette (Purdue) that couples mutual interests among the three campuses with national science and research initiatives, builds a cyberinfrastructure that supports the solution of breakthrough level problems, and enables continuing world-class advances in the underlying technologies of high performance computing.

Our approach begins with building a scalable, high speed, high bandwidth, science driven computational grid for Northwest Indiana across the three universities. Available network, computational, storage, visualization, and data resources, as well as specialized facilities, will be expanded, integrated, and shared among the partnering institutions, thereby providing opportunities to energize and connect the research communities, and to promote new scientific knowledge environments not previously possible.

Who is NWICG?

NWICG consists of Purdue University-Calumet, the University of Notre Dame, and Purdue University-West Lafayette. NWICG is currently operated under the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration and has worked through Argonne National Laboratory as well. NWICG is proud to be an official partner grid with the Open Science Grid (OSG), and both NWICG and OSG are supporting the other's users at their sites.

Users on NWICG function in three tiers:

  1. NWICG-sponsored researchers
  2. NWICG campus users
  3. Open Science Grid (OSG) users
Access to computational resources is distributed as fairly as possible amongst users at each level, with priority given to each tier above any lower tier users.

How do I use NWICG?

If you a researcher at one of the NWICG member campuses, we encourage you to apply for support by submitting a research proposal. Failing that, if you are at an NWICG member campus, you may submit jobs as a campus user. More information about how to register as a user and submit jobs is available in our User Guides. If you are not at any of the NWICG member campuses, you may still be able to submit jobs under the Open Science Grid (OSG). All OSG and NWICG users are also able to submit jobs to most sites on OSG and vice versa, so if a resource there would be better suited to your needs, you are welcome to explore that option.
