Enhancing Electric System Reliability and Communications with the NWICG
Image

This proposal seeks to conduct research and developmental activities to assist in enhancing reliability and communications for the interconnected electric transmission network. As evidenced by the huge financial and personal losses resulting from the recent blackout of a large portion of the Eastern Electric Interconnection, electric reliability is a crucial issue for the welfare of individuals as well as the economy of the United States. Current changes in the electric industry have mandated the development of new electric system reliability and market tools. With the formation of Regional Transmission Organizations and consolidation of historic control areas by Independent System Operators, there is a need to develop new approaches to conventional load flow calculations and data exchanges for technical as well as market purposes. This proposal is requesting support to initiate a preliminary research project to leverage the capabilities of the NWICG to enhance electric transmission system reliability and related communications.
