The biometrics research group at Notre Dame conducts (with support from DARPA, ONR, AFOSR, NSF, ITIC, DOJ, and UNISYS) cutting-edge research and performance evaluation of multibiometric systems. Notre Dame currently hosts the largest open research database of multibiometric signatures in the world. Their expertise includes high-resolution color face recognition, 3D face recognition, infrared imaging for face recognition, advanced techniques for iris recognition, face recognition in video streams, and fingerprint acquisition and processing. The future of biometrics will include spatiotemporal processing (multiple signatures from time-streams of data acquired from multiple sensors and sites). Organization, processing, and delivery of the growing data sets involved in our current and future work will require a large increase in storage needs as well as network bandwidth to support distributed computations for biometric experiments. The NWICG will be a key component of support for the biometrics research infrastructure.
